At Ocean52, we know that creating real impact requires building strong partnerships. That’s why we’ve joined forces with the Vellmarí Association in Formentera to protect and restore Posidonia Oceanica meadows. These ecosystems are vital for marine life and play a key role in combating climate change.
of Posidonia Meadows mapped and safeguarded thanks to our collaboration with the Vellmarí Association in Formentera.
We actively support the global goal of protecting 30% of our ocean by 2030 and take part in initiatives like this one to help achieve it.
Posidonia Oceanica meadows play a vital role in keeping our oceans healthy. Known as the "lungs of the Mediterranean," these underwater plants absorb large amounts of CO₂, helping fight climate change and keeping the water clean. They also provide essential habitats and food for marine life. But the benefits of Posidonia meadows don’t stop there. These underwater ecosystems also protect coastlines from erosion, support local fisheries, and preserve beach quality. They are indispensable both environmentally and economically.
The Balearic Islands are home to nearly 50% of Spain’s Posidonia meadows, making them key to these conservation efforts. This is especially critical as over 34% of the meadows in the Western Mediterranean have already disappeared.
Our partnership with the Vellmarí Association helps protect Posidonia Oceanica meadows by designating them as Marine Protected Status (MPS) zones. Using precise mapping through an app, we make these areas visible to everyone, limiting harmful activities like anchoring, pollution, and waste dumping.
Every square meter mapped adds to a growing network of protected habitats, allowing Posidonia meadows to keep absorbing carbon, supporting marine life, and shielding coastlines.
The Vellmarí Association carries out the replanting of Posidonia seeds with the aim of demonstrating how difficult it is to restore and, in doing so, emphasizes the importance of protection as the optimal way to regenerate marine habitats.
With No Plastic Water, you help protect Posidonia oceanica.
Together, we can turn our daily decisions into meaningful actions to care for the ocean. Every effort counts.
